Callie Hoskins

Artist Bio:
Callie Hoskins, known professionally as Nazzpuller, is a painter and collage artist based in Detroit, Michigan. Through her work, she subverts the cishet patriarchy using humor and a lot of glitter.

Artist Statement:
I create collages using black paint and gold glitter and cut and paste images of women taken from the pages of porn magazines. These images were initially meant  to arouse, and were created by and for the male gaze. The subjects in my work, however, sabotage the male gaze by becoming the most literal connotation of the objectification and sexualization of their bodies, a “piece of ass.” They are often a disembodied ass and vagina, with copious amounts of vaginal fluid, represented by gold glitter or gold leaf, leaking from their genitals to drown their surroundings, covering and destroying cars and other stereotypically male-oriented  objects. Yes they are powerful and subversive, but not as a powerful human being. Instead, they have turned into a destructive force of nature, a great flood swallowing the world.

My current work is about the rage, sadness, and alienation that I, and most femmes that I know, feel every time we are made to feel terrified, threatened or belittled by men. Most, if not all, of my female friends have been sexually assaulted, groped, catcalled, threatened, or harmed by men. This body of work is about using the means of our oppression, our own objectification, to harness power but at the cost of becoming monstrous, grotesque, and inhuman. It is the fear of a woman’s “feminine wiles” turned into a nightmarish reality.

Sex education and social issues regarding human sexuality and gender is deeply embedded in my art practice. This body of work is especially relevant during a time when we are analyzing how misogyny affects women in our society, particularly due to the Me Too Movement, the further silencing of sex workers with FOSTA/SESTA, and the epidemic of anti-transgender violence.
