Treasure Island: Past, Present and the Vision for the Future

Online

Description
Treasure Island & Yerba Buena Island sit in the heart of the San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Oakland.  Named after the Robert Louis Stevenson novel of the same name, it has an intriguing history as the site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition and then as a base for the US Navy.

Under the leadership of the Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA), the islands are now undergoing a radical, $6 billion redevelopment. Once complete, this new San Francisco community will comprise two neighborhoods with up to 8,000 homes.  Twenty-seven percent will be designated as affordable housing.  Also included in the plans are 500 hotel rooms, upscale retailers and mixed-use space.

One of the most notable features of the redevelopment will be the over 300 acres of public parks and open spaces representing the largest development of new open space in San Francisco since Golden Gate Park was developed in 1871.

This generational project presents unique challenges such as a 15+ year approval process, trans bay bridge improvements, a high affordability requirement, and a focus on sustainability.

V. Fei Tsen, President of the Treasure Island Development Authority, will speak about the history of the project, the status of current and future construction and the importance of the public realm.  Lauren Stahl will speak on the hallmark development of the 300 acres of public parks and open space.
