We are excited to invite you to join NEXT Village and Aquatic Park Senior Center for a special in person historic walking tour of the newly re-opened Black Point Historic Gardens in north east Fort Mason.

Located in upper Fort Mason and overlooking Aquatic Park, Black Point historic gardens is a developing walking garden with unbeatable views of the bay.

This 160 year old site has just opened to the public for the first time ever, after 50 years behind fences. There is a rich history to unpack in this beautiful landscape: from the original inhabitants of the area--the Ramaytush Ohlone, the "Genteel Squatters" who built the beginnings of the gardens, the Military use of the area during wartime, and the current uses by the public as part of a National Park site, there is no shortage of stories to share. Bring your binoculars and walking shoes--there are lots of birds to see and plenty of stairs to climb.

We'll learn about the history and restoration from people involved in the project who can't wait to show off all of the hard work they've been doing with the community these past few years! While the gardens are still in the process of being developed, we will get to walk on the restored historic pathways, enjoy breathtaking views that are open for the first time to the public in 50 years and appreciate the garden emphasis on native and water-wise plants, with an eye to pollinator habitat.

Note to bird lovers:  There are LOTS of birds that visit the site: several great blue herons, red tailed hawks, hummingbirds, peregrine falcons, parrots, and a great horned owl are just a few of the feathered friends who regularly visit. No guarantee they will be present for our walking tour, but definitely worth bringing binoculars just in case.

Please Note:

  • The site is about an acre in size on a hillside, the pathways are not lengthy but walkers will have to navigate a few hefty sets of stairs unassisted, so it may not be suitable for everyone. Contact Donna if you have questions if it is suitable for you - donna [at] nextvillagesf.org.
  • By registering for this event, you acknowledge that you are fully Covid vaccinated, are able to walk a minimum of 1+ mile unassisted without support, and that you won't hold NEXT Village liable for things that hopefully won't, but could happen, when you are out for a walk.
  • Masks are required to be worn as we won't be able to practice 6' distancing on this walk.
  • This is a limited capacity event and this time is currently full. You can register for the waitlist for the 2PM tour at https://www.monami.io/calendars/next-village/events/3977
