Description
Come to the Octagon House for a tour and our next “Salon” to hear more about local history. This month we'll explore the histories of some famous women who used their wealth and energies to benefit the Bay Area and the nation:

  • Louise Boyd - an SF socialite and an adventurer who explored and photographed the arctic territories ... and led a bit of a double life helping the US government during World War II.
  • Caroline Livermore - a well-to-do mighty conservationist who helped found the Marin Audubon Society and the Marin Conservation League, and helped in the creation of many local parks. If you enjoy Angel Island, Stinson Beach, Samuel P. Taylor State Park, you can thank Ms. Livermore.
  • Jane Stanford - came west with her husband Leland for the Gold Rush. They co-founded Leland Stanford Junior University in honor of their son. Ms. Stanford was a force to be reckoned with who single-handedly kept the University going until her untimely and mysterious death.

Our host for this event, the National Society of The Colonial Dames  - California (NSCDA), are dedicated to colonial history, historic preservation and patriotism. All three of the dynamic women we'll feature today shared in common their devotion to American patriotism and were all members of the NSCDA. This event will be presented by another amazing Colonial Dame, Rebecca Pringle.

Join us for an afternoon of history and dazzling Dames in honor of Women's History Month!

After the Salon, we invite you to tour the Octagon House -- the eight-sided San Francisco historical landmark that is an architectural treasure as well as a Colonial and Federal Periods Decorative Arts Museum.
