Description
Come and celebrate Día de los Muertos, also known as The Day of the Dead, with The Mexican Museum!

If you feel like death is a taboo subject, then this program is for you.

If you think of it as the Mexican Halloween or a macabre holiday, then this is a must!

Diane Levy, Director of Education for The Mexican Museum, will demystify this misunderstood holiday for some or add to your knowledge for others.

  • Gain a new understanding of the anticipation and excitement the Mexican people feel as they welcome the spirits of their dearly departed ones.
  • Hear about the history, traditions, and cosmology of the Aztecs and changes that occurred after the arrival of the Spanish.
  • Learn why Montezuma was so accepting of Hernan Cortes.
  • Find out why skulls and skeletons don’t make the Mexicans feel uncomfortable, nor see them as something frightening, but  something to embrace like the iconic figure of “La Catrina.”

You will see how this special holiday unfolds into a  three day celebration.  Via Zoom, we'll "visit" a market and a cemetery, and see how the people welcome the spirits of the loved ones. Finally,  Diane will touch on the important role the Chicano had in spreading this holiday to the United States. We'll have Q&A after the presentation and welcome you to share your stories.

Presenter:  Diane Levy is a third generation native San Franciscan.  She was raised and continues to reside in San Francisco. She graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in sociology and received her teaching credentials from University of San Francisco State.  She taught elementary school for 35 years and received the California Lottery Exceptional Educators Award in 2003.  After retiring from teaching, she went to work for The Mexican Museum in San Francisco, initially as a docent and later becoming the Director of Education.

Future note: We look forward to visiting the The Mexican Museum when it opens in 2024 at the intersection of Mission & 3rd Streets. Visit their website at https://www.mexicanmuseum.org.
