You are NOT confirmed for this event when you register. A staff person will email you if a spot is available for you.
Anke's latest excursion to visit great places by public transportation takes us to Tiburon!
We will take Golden Gate Ferry from San Francisco to Tiburon and start our adventure with lunch (bring your own or join Anke at Acri cafe at Ferry Landing) before walking along the waterfront of Shoreline Park to visit the Railroad & Ferry Deport Museum.
We will go to Historic Ark Row, past the spot where the Belvedere-Tiburon draw bridge used to be. We'll continue to China Cabin, which was a former Victorian First Class Saloon for the PS China, a side-wheel steamer serving the route San Francisco to Far East.
Anke has arranged a tour for our group of China Cabin (30 minutes) and the Railroad museum (1 hour). Cost for both will be $5 per person.
We'll catch the 4:35pm Ferry back to San Francisco, returning to SF around 5:30pm.
Join us to explore another interesting and beautiful spot in the greater Bay Area by public transit with Anke!
Please note:
- We will be taking public transit meeting no later than 10:30 am at the SF Ferry Building. Confirmed registrants will be sent meeting up information to find group. We will return to San Francisco by Ferry arriving SF at approximately 5:30pm.
- By registering for this event, you acknowledge that you are able to walk a minimum of 2+ miles unassisted without support, and that you won't hold NEXT Village or volunteers liable for things that hopefully won't, but could happen, when you are out for a walk.
- To ensure the safety and comfort of all participants, dogs are not permitted at NEXT Village events or activities unless they are service animals trained to assist individuals with disabilities, as defined by applicable laws. Handlers of service animals must ensure their animals are under control, well-behaved, and free from illness.
- Only rain will cancel, fog/mist will not stop us. Check your email day before and morning of walk for updates.
- There is a set itinerary for the group. If you want to explore Tiburon on your own, then this excursion is NOT for you. The emphasis is on exploring a place together. If you prefer to do your own thing or not hang out with a group, then this trip would not be enjoyable for you.
- Walks are relatively slow paced, however people should be able to walk the distance unassisted without frequent stops so as not to impede the group. If you have mobility issues, because this is a group walk, please consider if you would easily be able to keep up with a group. The group will walk at a relaxed conversational group pace. Except for one uneven section with an option to avoid, this walk is paved and suitable for people who use walkers if you are able to walk the distance at the group pace. Benches are available along the route and group will stop periodically. Please consider your own abilities to determine if keeping up with a group walk would be comfortable for you. If it would be hard for you to keep up with a group or if you need frequent rest stops, we recommend that NEXT Village members contact our volunteer coordinator Camille to see if she can find a volunteer to do an excursion at your own pace with you.
A bit of Tiburon History: Spanish explorers named the area Punta de Tiburón (Point Tiburon) in 1775. One hundred years later, due to its the proximity to San Francisco, Point Tiburon became a major railroad and ferry terminus, maintenance yard and industrial town. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad was started 1884 and served as a major ferry/rail connection between San Francisco and the north, like Eureka. The last train ran in 1967. From 1889-1930, Tiburon was a bustling, rowdy railroad town. The original buildings on Main Street served the railroad workers, shopkeepers and their families. The rest of Main Street is known as Ark Row. The name recalls 1890s recreational houseboat lifestyle enjoyed in Belvedere Cove by sea captains, bohemian artists, and summer residents from San Francisco. After 1900, the craze for arks waned. Some docked along lagoon shorelines and were converted to permanent local housing. Part of the lagoon is now a parking lot. During Prohibition speakeasies along Main Street had trap doors to the Bay to access the boats bringing in whiskey. More info at https://landmarkssociety.com/landmarks/
