Explore Presidio Tunnel Tops + Ranger Led Tour of Crissy Field Past & Present

When?
Tuesday, Aug 9 1:30PM - 3:30PM PDT

Where?
In-person

Description
It's finally open! Come explore Presidio Tunnel Tops, San Francisco's newest national park with us plus learn about the history of Crissy Field.

What to Expect:
  • We'll start with a welcome and introduction to Tunnel Tops with Erick Cortes, Lead Park Ranger of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Southern Areas (approx 30 min)
  • Casual walk at your own pace around Tunnel Tops park to enjoy the scenic overlooks on paved paths through gardens and meadows on the 14-acre site built on top of the Presidio Parkway tunnels (which replaced Doyle Drive for those of you who remember that far back).  You can check out the views, art murals, campfire pit, picnic areas, visitor center, and the Outpost nature play area, where kids of all ages can climb, crawl, and swing! (approx 20 min)
  • After exploring Tunnel Tops park, Ranger Fátima Colindres will continue our tour of the area's history with a Crissy Field Past and Present history walk explaining how Crissy Field has changed through time from the Ohlone to today's park. She'll also identify some of the medicinal plants and their uses.  (approx 90 min)

Join us for this exciting afternoon to check out the long awaited Tunnel Tops park and to learn about the past and present of Crissy Field!

Please note:
  • Advance registration required.
  • Starting address, meeting up instructions and transportation options will be sent in confirmation email after you register.  In addition to bus options, there is paid and accessible parking nearby.
  • Starting location will be near the Presidio parade ground on Lincoln Blvd (near a MUNI 43 bus stop and Presidio Go Shuttle stop).
  • Ending location will be near Sports Basement off Crissy Field (near MUNI 30 bus stop) or you can walk back up the bluff to the 43 bus stop.
  • To set expectations,  this "walking tour" will have more standing (and some sitting) rather than a lot of walking as we will be stopping often to  learn about the history of the area from Rangers Erick and Fatima. After our tour, there are lots of great walking paths if you want to get more exercise.
  • Tunnel Tops Path is paved with a wheelchair accessible grade. The Crissy Field history talk will cover about 1 mile on flat hard packed dirt paths.
  • This is an person, outdoor event. By registering for this event, you acknowledge that you are fully Covid vaccinated & have received at least one booster shot, are able to walk a minimum of 2 miles unassisted, will wear a mask for the ranger tour, and that you won't hold NEXT Village liable for things that hopefully won't, but could happen, when you are out for a walk.
If you have any mobility challenges and want to check if this walk is appropriate for you, or if you want to volunteer to help us with this or other walking events, please email Donna - donna [at] nextvillagesf.org

Sorry! The event you're trying to register for has already happened. Please return to the event calendar to see what upcoming events we have or contact NEXT Village at (415) 574-0156 if you'd like to learn about similar upcoming events.
