Presidio Bus & Walking Tour Back in Time: El Polin and Mountain Lake (free private NEXT Village tour)

Join park ranger Fatima Colindres and take a journey back in time to the Presidio's Rancho Period on a free private bus & walking tour with NEXT Village. Many of you have joined us for some of Ranger Fatima's Presidio history tours and know what a great story teller and historian she is so we are so excited to have her share stories of two places in the Presidio that many people are not aware of or rarely visit.

On this incredible journey, we will visit and explore:
  • El Polin Spring to hear the story of Juana Briones, a local medicine woman who lived at El Presidio during the Spanish, Mexican and early American Period. Learn uses of native plants, taste medicinal teas, and learn to play Ohlone games. 
  • Mountain Lake to learn the story of Maria Isadora Tapia, Juana's mother and her incredible journey from Mexico to the Bay Area with the Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition of 1775-1776. 

This private bus tour allows us to discover and explore unique places in the Presidio and Ranger Fatima's stories will bring the past to life. We are so excited to have her share more about the history of El Presidio with us!

Please note: 
  • This is a limited capacity event (25 people). Each person must register separately for this event. Note: If you try to register a guest under your email address and phone number, they will NOT be registered, so make sure each guest registers separately using their name and contact information.
  • Confirmed registrants will receive a mandatory attendee information form to complete prior to event (e.g., pick up location, emergency contact info, etc.)
  • Tour will require ability to climb a few steps/stairs to get on/off the bus. Not all of the places we will walk around are fully ADA accessible. There will be periods of standing to listen to ranger Fatima's stories and information about the area. If you have mobility issues, please register and see the instructions in the confirmation to contact Donna if you have questions or concerns. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and let you know what's entailed so you can decide if this tour is right for you. 
  • There will be two pick up locations -- please be prompt so you don't miss the bus! 
    - 1 PM at the NEXT Village Office 
    - 1:30 PM and the Presidio Transit Center (near MUNI #43 bus stop or a 0.3 mile walk with an uphill ramp or stairs from #30 bus stop)
  • For those who want to meet us in the Presidio, we invite you to join us at noon for a picnic before the tour at Tunnel Tops. Lunch registration is separate. See confirmation email for link to sign up.
