Secrets of Cow Hollow -- Neighborhood History Walk

When?
Thursday, Apr 28 12:30PM - 2:00PM PDT

Where?
In-person

Description
Join us for the SECRETS of COW HOLLOW, a fascinating history walk through an historic gem of a neighborhood with John Nockels (a familiar face to those of you who have joined any of our Improv or holiday Zoom shows!)

A few highlights John will talk about along the way include Digby's Castle, Mayor Burr's stately Victorian, tales of Lotta Crabtree dancing on a barrel, Orson Fowler freeing women from their corsets and Talbot H. Green who lied his way to power (and still managed to get a street named after him)!

We will end our history walk at the Octagon House, which was built in 1861, saved in 1952 and now houses a Decorative Arts Museum with items from the Colonial and Federal Period. After our walk you can go inside and get an in-house tour by a Colonial Dame.

The walk takes an hour and a half, covers about a mile, and we promise there are no steep SF hills to climb. If you wish to visit the Octagon House, there are stairs.

Walk Leader: This casual walk will be led by John Nockels, a San Francisco City Guide with 10 years experience.  John loves telling stories (mostly true) and has done tours of Telegraph Hill, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, City Hall and Cow Hollow.

Please note:
  • Register in advance to receive starting address and meeting up directions - Starting location will be near Van Ness & Pacific. Ending location will be at Gough & Union. Address and meeting up instructions are emailed after you register.
  • Path is primarily on sidewalks with a few gentle up and down slopes. This is a relatively short walk as it will be focused on learning about the neighborhood rather than logging steps.
  • Please note that the Octagon House is not ADA accessible. There are steps to enter and stairs to get to the second floor. A 5 minute "virtual tour" YouTube video is available online - click here for virtual tour. The Octagon house is free, however donations are appreciated.
