Walking Group: Presidio Lovers' Lane & Wood Line

Description
Intrepid walkers are invited to join us for a Presidio walk combining art, history, romance, and an uphill slope to get in some exercise!
We’ll start near the Presidio’s Lombard St Gate, walk past the Letterman Digital Arts Complex to the Tennessee Hollow Watershed where we’ll start our walk on Lovers’ Lane. Lovers’ Lane is the oldest footpath through the Presidio. It was established in the 18th century as a shortcut used by Spanish soldiers and missionaries to get from the Main Post to Mission Dolores and to visit their lovers and family in San Francisco!
We’ll start near the Presidio’s Lombard St Gate, walk past the Letterman Digital Arts Complex to the Tennessee Hollow Watershed where we’ll start our walk on Lovers’ Lane. Lovers’ Lane is the oldest footpath through the Presidio. It was established in the 18th century as a shortcut used by Spanish soldiers and missionaries to get from the Main Post to Mission Dolores and to visit their lovers and family in San Francisco!
Along uphill walk to the Presidio Gate, we’ll detour off Lovers’ Lane to enjoy and walk along Wood Line, an art installation by Andy Goldsworthy located in the eucalyptus forest. This sculpture is made up of felled tree trunks laid end-to-end to create a zigzagging installation that you can even stroll on top of – it’s a literal art walk! There's also an option to detour to take a peek at some enlisted men's and officers' houses from the 1930s.
We’ll end the walk near Presidio Blvd and Pacific Avenue. If anyone wants a bit more exercise and scenery, there will be option to walk to or down Lyon St steps and check out Billionaire’s row (a 3-block stretch on Broadway Street between Divisadero and Lyon Street with some of the most expensive homes in the Bay Area).
This is an person, outdoor event. By registering for this event, you acknowledge that you are fully Covid vaccinated & boosted, are able to walk a minimum of 2 miles unassisted, will wear a mask in consideration of other walkers, and that you won't hold NEXT Village liable for things that hopefully won't, but could happen, when you are out for a walk.
Please note:
- Register in advance to receive the meeting location.
- This is an in person uphill walk with an average grade of 9% with maximum grade of 21%, and a challenge level of easy to moderate.
- While you can stay on paved and boardwalk path throughout, please note that the walk we’ll take along Goldsworthy’s Wood line is loose dirt.
- Total distance from Lombard Gate to Presidio Gate will be under 1 1/2 miles. To return to the starting point via the Lyon St steps will be just over 1/12 miles
- Rain cancels. Check your email the morning of the event if weather looks questionable to see if event is still on.
