Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions about hiring a companion. Have more? Ask your question here.

The trust and safety of our seniors is everything. That’s why every Mon Ami companion goes through a rigorous application, interview screening, and criminal background check. Through that process, we get to know the interests, passions, and personality of our companions, so that we can make amazing, tailored matches: engineering students with retired mechanics, fine arts students with passionate musicians, and more.

Here at Mon Ami, we strongly believe Activity Companions can bring positive enrichment to your loved ones’ lives. There is vast research and studies behind the risks of social isolation and loneliness for the elderly. New studies show quality of life can dramatically improve with social interaction for those suffering from dementia. Activity Companions are the perfect way to bring engagement and socialization because they are there for just one purpose: to spend time with your love ones.

Mon Ami activity companions are focused on bringing your loved one joy, connection, and friendship. Companions play games, go on walks, sing, dance, paint, read, and help with memoir-writing.  After each visit, companions will report back about their experience with your loved one by sharing a photo and description of the visit.

Mon Ami students are NOT home care workers or home health aides and do not assist with activities of daily living (e.g. bathing, using the restroom, dressing), nor do they provide healthcare services.

Companions will come to your loved one in-home, whether they live in a private residence or a senior living community! Companions are expected to provide their own transportation to your location for every visit.

The visit schedule is tailored to fit your and your loved one’s needs as well as the companion’s schedule. On average, companions visit loved ones two times per week for 2-3 hours each visit.

No! While many home care agencies require a 4hr minimum booking, Mon Ami has no hourly minimums for a visit. Visits can be as short as 1 hour or as long as 8 hours.

Mon Ami strongly recommends that someone close to your loved one is present for the first visit(s), to introduce your loved one and the companion. After that, companions do not expect you to be immediately present during their visit with your loved one. However, depending on your loved one’s needs, we may ask that a trusted person be on premises during visits.

Mon Ami aspires to continuity. Each person is unique, and companions want to get to know your loved one’s preferences, quirks, and moods to give them the best possible experience. When trying Mon Ami for the first time, we recommend meeting 2-3 companions who can be a familiar face supporting your loved one for times when your primary companion experiences changes in their schedule (e.g. weddings or summer vacations).

Visits are $25/hour, the majority of which goes to the Mon Ami companion. Mon Ami sets that rate to attract the best possible students and hold them accountable to high-quality interactions with your loved one.  Payment is only accepted via credit card through the Mon Ami platform.
