Supporting San Francisco's Volunteer Response

In March, Mayor London Breed of San Francisco announced the creation of a new public-private partnership with Mon Ami and local nonprofits to support San Francisco seniors and people with disabilities who are isolated by COVID-19.  Mon Ami is donating its matching technology and smartphone app to the City of San Francisco to create a citywide volunteer network during the pandemic and throughout the duration of the Stay Home Public Health Order.

The Mon Ami volunteer match program is currently being piloted with OpenHouse, a San Francisco-based LGBTQ organization that provides housing and support services to seniors and adults with disabilities. The Office of Transgender Initiatives is assisting with the pilot program.

One in five San Franciscans is over the age of 65 or an adult with disabilities.  Mayor Breed’s leadership recognizes that not all seniors and adults with disabilities have the family, friend, neighbor relationships that are so crucial right now and that we all have the responsibility to make sure those around us receive support and feel connected and cared for.

Hundreds of volunteers have already stepped forward to support the effort, offering to call and check in on a regular basis, as well as support errand runs for groceries, prescriptions, and other essentials.

“Now is the time for us all to come together and play our part,” said Madeline Dangerfield-Cha, Mon Ami co-founder. “Even before COVID-19, seniors were at great mental and physical health risk due to social isolation; we can use our technology to show these individuals how much they matter and that we are here for them, no matter what.”

Supporting Los Angeles Council District 4

Councilmember David Ryu represents Los Angeles’ 4th Council District.  In April, Councilmember Ryu announced a Senior Outreach Program to help older residents of Council District 4.  The volunteer program is powered by the Mon Ami platform to match volunteers one-to-one with seniors.

Mon Ami’s platform is helping Council District 4 reach its seniors who are vulnerable not just to COVID-19, but to social isolation and food insecurity.  Through the program, city official are connecting seniors with volunteers who can pick up a prescription, buy groceries, or check in with a friendly conversation.
