Anke has arranged a tour for our group of China Cabin (30 minutes) and the Railroad museum (1 hour). Cost for both will be $5 per person.

We'll catch the 4:35pm Ferry back to San Francisco, returning to SF around 5:30pm.

Join us to explore another interesting and beautiful spot in the greater Bay Area by public transit with Anke!

Please note:
  • We will be taking public transit meeting no later than 10:30 am at the SF Ferry Building. Confirmed registrants will be sent meeting up information to find group. We will return to San Francisco by Ferry arriving SF at approximately 5:30pm.
  • By registering for this event, you acknowledge that you are able to walk a minimum of 2+ miles unassisted without support, and that you won't hold NEXT Village or volunteers liable for things that hopefully won't, but could happen, when you are out for a walk.
  • To ensure the safety and comfort of all participants, dogs are not permitted at NEXT Village events or activities unless they are service animals trained to assist individuals with disabilities, as defined by applicable laws. Handlers of service animals must ensure their animals are under control, well-behaved, and free from illness.
  • Only rain will cancel, fog/mist will not stop us. Check your email day before and morning of walk for updates.
  • There is a set itinerary for the group. If you want to explore Tiburon on your own, then this excursion is NOT for you. The emphasis is on exploring a place together. If you prefer to do your own thing or not hang out with a group, then this trip would not be enjoyable for you.
  • Walks are relatively slow paced, however people should be able to walk the distance unassisted without frequent stops so as not to impede the group.
  • Walk Distances:
    - Ferry Landing/Cafe to Museum walk - 1/2 mile, flat and asphalted. We will not be stopping along the way to the museum to make our tour time.
    - Museum 1-2pm.
    - Walk along Main Street and Ark Row - about 1 mile and we will make one stop to rest.
  • If you have mobility issues, because this is a group walk, please consider if you would easily be able to keep up with a group. The group will walk at a relaxed conversational group pace. This walk is paved and suitable for people who use walkers if you are able to walk the distance at the group pace.  Please consider your own abilities to determine if distances noted and keeping up with a group walk would be comfortable for you.  If it would be hard for you to keep up with a group or if you need more rest stops than offered,  we recommend that NEXT Village members contact our volunteer coordinator Camille to see if she can find a volunteer to do an excursion at your own pace with you

A bit of Tiburon History:  Spanish explorers named the area Punta de Tiburón (Point Tiburon) in 1775. One hundred years later, due to its proximity to San Francisco, Point Tiburon became a major railroad and ferry terminus, maintenance yard and industrial town. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad was started 1884 and served as a major ferry/rail connection between San Francisco and the north, like Eureka. The last train ran in 1967.  From 1889-1930, Tiburon was a bustling, rowdy railroad town. The original buildings on Main Street served the railroad workers, shopkeepers and their families. The rest of Main Street is known as Ark Row.  The name recalls 1890s recreational houseboat lifestyle enjoyed in Belvedere Cove by sea captains, bohemian artists, and summer residents from San Francisco. After 1900, the craze for arks waned. Some docked along lagoon shorelines and were converted to permanent local housing. Part of the lagoon is now a parking lot. During Prohibition speakeasies along Main Street had trap doors to the Bay to access the boats bringing in whiskey.  More info at landmarkssociety.com/landmarks

Sid's Movie Salon: The Band's Visit

Monday, July 28
4:00PM - 5:45PM PDT
Instructors:
Sidney J.P. "Sid" Hollister
Movie buff Sid Hollister shows a movie at the NEXT Village office at 704 Filbert Street, at Columbus Ave, usually on the fourth Monday of the month.

The July movie is The Band's Visit.

Description: The film received acclaim from critics and audiences. It won eight Ophir Prizes awarded by the Israeli Film Academy.[2]
The eight men of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrive in Israel from Egypt. They have been booked by an Arab cultural center in Petah Tikva, but through a miscommunication (Arabic has no "p" sound, and regularly replaces it with "b"), the band takes a bus to Beit Hatikva, a fictional town in the middle of the Negev Desert.[5]

The Egyptians encounter a few Israeli townspeople, who respond with curiosity about the band, are variously friendly and wary, and provide them with shelter, food, music and companionship during their visit. There is no transportation out of the town that day, and there are no hotels for them to spend the night in.

The band members dine at a small restaurant where the owner, Dina (Ronit Elkabetz) invites them to stay the night at her apartment, at her friends' apartment, and in the restaurant. No one quite falls in love, but a sense of unspoken longing and loneliness is expressed.[6]

Author Talk: Part-Time Nomads with Anne Breedlove

Saturday, August 9
1:00PM - 2:30PM PDT
Instructors:
Anne Breedlove
Join us for an inspirational author talk with Anne Breedlove on how she and her husband metamorphosed from middle-aged, suburban working parents to international bicycle travelers.

Whaddya do when you find yourself – after spending three-and-a-half hours consuming a five-course meal and a bottle of wine – bicycling back roads in the dark with a bunch of very unhappy sheep?  Not something most people would consider a plus, Anne found her view of the world and her place in it transformed. Follow along as she and her husband Jim stumble on a different way of traveling the world.

Anne’s first book, PART-TIME NOMADS, is about this adventure and its aftermath.

"We pedaled through rain and snow and car exhaust, sang at the top of our lungs to ward off bears, and soaked in clothing-optional hot springs. We struggled with our differences as a couple. I’m an extrovert and a planner. Jim is a machinery-loving introvert who likes surprises. We weren’t always on the same page as we tried to stay safe and sane and married. Along the way, “Can we?” morphed into a gleeful “We can do it!”"

Come enjoy an afternoon of living vicariously through Anne & Jim's travels or be inspired to embark on your own travel adventure!
____________
About the Author:  Anne M. Breedlove is the sixth of ten children born and raised in Albany, New York. Visiting San Francisco during a cross-country road trip in 1972, she decided to stay. A happenstance event in 1997 opened her eyes to the possibility of cycling not just for fun and recreation but using the bicycle as a means of international travel. In 2008 Anne and her husband Jim decided to retire young to travel as much of the world as they could on their bikes, visiting twenty-one countries and pedaling more than 40,000 miles. Find Anne on her website: annembreedlove.com

PART-TIME NOMADS is available online and also in numerous San Francisco bookstores – Dog-Eared Books on Valencia, Browser Books on Fillmore, Russian Hill Books on Polk, and Bird & Beckett on Chenery.
