If you feel inclined, you may choose to donate a portion of your proceeds to NEXT Village (completely optional).

History of San Francisco’s 1906 Earthquake & Fire with Historian John Martini

Thursday, April 16
5:45PM - 7:00PM PDT
Instructors:
Marianne Milton
At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, a massive earthquake estimated at magnitude 7.9 struck along the San Andreas Fault, violently shaking San Francisco and the surrounding region. Buildings collapsed, streets split open, and gas lines ruptured. In the hours that followed, fires ignited across the city and burned for three days, destroying more than 28,000 buildings and leaving roughly 250,000 residents homeless. Despite the devastation, the disaster also sparked one of the most remarkable rebuilding efforts in American urban history, reshaping San Francisco’s architecture, infrastructure, and civic identity.

Join NEXT Villagers for “Making History Fun Again,” honoring the city’s legendary past through lively storytelling and unforgettable personalities as  historian John Martini presents a fascinating look at one of the most defining events in San Francisco history: the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Through photographs, stories, and historical insights, Martini will explore how the earthquake and fires unfolded, how residents responded in the chaotic days afterward, and how the city ultimately rebuilt itself from the ashes.

About the Speaker: John Martini is a historian, author, and retired National Park Service ranger known for his engaging presentations on San Francisco history and military history in the Bay Area. During his decades with the National Park Service, Martini worked at sites including Alcatraz Island and the Presidio, where he helped interpret the region’s complex historical landscape. A widely respected authority on the 1906 disaster, Martini has researched the earthquake and fires extensively and frequently lectures on how the event transformed San Francisco. His storytelling combines rigorous historical research with vivid personal accounts from survivors, bringing one of the city’s most dramatic chapters to life.

Thanks to The Clift Royal Sonesta hotel for inviting NEXT Villagers to participate in this presentation. Advance registration required.

Location for this in person only event is two blocks from Union Square. Address & meeting up directions will be emailed to registrants. Friends are welcome, but make sure guests register themselves so their names will be included on the guest list.

Discover the History of the San Francisco Columbarium & Plan Ahead with Confidence

Join NEXT Village for a special guided tour of the historic San Francisco Columbarium, an architectural and cultural treasure tucked away in the city. This unique experience offers the opportunity to explore a beautiful landmark while learning about the importance of planning ahead for life’s final chapter.

Originally designed in 1898 by British architect Bernard Cahill and later carefully restored, the Columbarium is both a serene resting place and a fascinating window into San Francisco’s past. Once part of the historic Odd Fellows Cemetery, the building features a stunning rotunda with mosaic tile floors, ornate stained-glass windows and a domed skylight. Its breathtaking 45-foot atrium is surrounded by intricate balconies, and each of the four floors reveals stories and memorials that reflect the rich history of the city.

The Columbarium houses cremated remains in beautifully designed memorial niches. Unlike traditional in-ground burials, these niches often reflect the personalities and passions of those memorialized. As you walk through the galleries, you’ll see creative tributes—from urns shaped like cookie jars to elaborate homages to the San Francisco Giants, miniature golf bags, dancing Hawaiian figurines and more. Many well-known and influential San Franciscans are interred here, including individuals whose names live on in streets, landmarks and local history.

The Columbarium is part of the Dignity Memorial network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers, known for compassionate care and personalized service.

Following the tour, we will participate in a thoughtful, open discussion about a topic many people avoid: planning what you would like done after you die. While we carefully plan vacations, celebrations and milestones, conversations about end-of-life wishes are often postponed because they can feel difficult.

This session provides a comfortable, informative space to ask questions and learn about funeral planning, final resting place options and the benefits of pre-planning. By making arrangements in advance, you can help spare your loved ones the emotional and financial burden of making difficult decisions during a time of grief—and ensure your personal wishes are honored.

Come explore a hidden architectural gem, learn about San Francisco history and gain peace of mind by starting an important conversation about the future.

Please note:
  • This tour will require walking up three levels on narrow staircases. If you would not be comfortable doing so or if you are interested in learning about the SF Columbarium on another date, you can contact the Columbarium directly at 415-771-0717 to attend one of their Funeral and Cremation Planning Seminars.
  • Per NEXT Village policy, dogs are not permitted unless they are service animals trained to assist individuals with disabilities.
  • NEXT Village and D2U members have priority for the 12 spots on this tour until 4/7.  If you are not yet a NEXT Village member, Click here to watch a quick video to learn about NEXT Village and you can Click here to learn about membership benefits & to apply if you want to join our vibrant community.
  • You will NOT get a confirmation email after registering for this event unless a staff member confirms you for a spot on this limited capacity tour.

Stress Busters -- Monthly Workshop (Zoom)

Thursday, April 23
1:00PM - 2:00PM PDT
Instructors:
Eileen Chan
Stress Busters workshops are open to everyone to help us learn how to better respond to any situation in a helpful way instead of getting upset.

We all have stress - that uneasy feeling we get when we're upset, whether it's because we're angry, worried, depressed or disturbed for other reasons. Stress is our reaction to big problems, like dealing with a family crisis, or to smaller everyday problems, like a crowded bus and no one offering you a seat.  Stress is often seen as external circumstances that disturb us and make us miserable.

Through Stress Busters, we recognize that stress is actually the result of our own reactions. It is how we view a situation and how we choose to react that gives us stress. We cannot control our external circumstances; however, we can use Stress Busters tools to control ourselves and the choices we make so we calmly respond to situations in an appropriate, helpful way.

If anything is stressing you out, we invite you to join us. Each session provides a skit to help us more easily visualize a cause of stress, and then provides simple yet highly effective steps to help you handle stress, make better decisions and live your life better.

If you haven't tried Stress Busters yet, join us to learn how to reduce your stress and handle whatever life throws at you!

  • New topics are presented every month & everyone is welcome.
  • This group is free and NEXT Village membership is not required. First timers are always welcome.
  • Stress Busters workshops are typically the 3rd Thursday of each month, except holidays.
  • Save the Dates:  April 23, May 21, (canceled in June), July 23 .
  • Visit the NEXT Village Events Calendar to register for future dates (registration opens about a month before the meeting) at  nextvillagesf.org/upcoming-events

Presenter - Eileen Chan is a native San Franciscan. She has volunteered with Stress Busters since the organization was founded over 30 years ago. Eileen is trained as an optometrist.

About the exhibition
Although Claude Monet visited Venice only once, his paintings of the city are among his most dazzling. This exhibition, co-organized with the Brooklyn Museum, is the first dedicated to Monet’s Venetian cityscapes since their debut over a century ago. Featuring more than 100 artworks, the exhibition places Monet’s Venice paintings alongside select works from across his career, including his Water Lilies, as well as Venetian views by artists such as Renoir, Sargent, and Canaletto. Unlike the bustling scenes painted by other artists, Monet’s Venice is eerily deserted, its architecture, buildings, and canals dissolving in an encompassing, hazy light he described as the enveloppe. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Monet’s vision of the famed Italian city.
